Bates backs clampdown on uninsured drivers

Mick Bates Assembly Member for Montgomeryshire has shadowed Dyfed Powys police officers for a day as part of the Assembly Police Scheme.

Commenting Mick said:

"My day with Dyfed Powys Police was a real eye opener and highlighted the important need for a close liaison between the Welsh Assembly and local police forces.

"Shadowing police officers for the day was a stark reminder of the invaluable work that these officers do. Particularly impressive was the employment of new technologies, which are proving extremely effective in the fight against crime.

"ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) is now widespread throughout the country including Powys. It enables officers to know almost immediately if someone is driving illegally, or whether that vehicle has been involved in criminal activity.

"I was shocked to learn that around one third of drivers have driven without insurance. Uninsured drivers now account for 5% of motorists and the Motor Insurance Bureau paid out £500 million to the victims of uninsured motorists last year. This is paid out of the premiums of honest motorists and adds £30 to £60 to the premiums of other motorists.

"The reality is that approximately only 16% of uninsured drivers get convicted each year. ANPR is a vital weapon that can increase this percentage and drive down premiums for law abiding citizens and I was pleased to have the chance to see this technology in action."
